Agriculture

Vazhakkad as its name indicates is famous for agriculture. The beauty of vazhakkad is fulfilled with hills, valleys, chaliyar river, cultivation, fields etc…apart from the cultivation of cereals, coconut, banana there are rubber, pepper, vegetables etc. The life of the people in olden days was completely dependent on the agriculture. When comparing to the sea level the earth can be classified as 20mts, in between 20 and 40mts, between 40 and 60 mts, 60 and 100mts and above.

Mudakozhimala in kannethumpara, Kadiyathanmala in Ananthayoor, Azhukuthamkunnu of Elamaram etc are above 100mts. The ownership of the complete land was under the Nilambur Kovilakam, Kizhakke Kovilakam, Padinjare Kovilakam, Kizhakkumbattu Namboothiripadu, Kakkuzhi Illathu Moosath, Cheruvakathu Illam, Thrikalayoor Devasom, Ananthayur Devasom, Sree Valayanad Devasom, Kondoty Thangal, and Koyppathodi etc.

There were tenants who looked after the lands. After the majority act was passed the landlord –tenant relationship came to an end. All the land came in the hands of the tenants. Lands were divided into parts and were used to construct houses, buildings etc.. This paved way for the farmers to shrink from their occupation. The evolution of education and the upcoming of the mavoor company were main reasons for the shrinking.
Agriculture was dependent on the rain. In 1964 the situation changed by the arrival of electricity. In 1985 Vazhakkad lift irrigation plan came into being. But the effect of this reached in only a few regions.

Some of the other cultivations in vazhakkad during that period were wheat, arecanut, white pepper, rubber, coconut palm, vegetables, aloe plant etc…

In 1971 there was a cardamom development office in the panchayath. This was transformed to a powerful agricultural development office.

In 1987 September this became active for only vazhakkad panchayath.
The present activities here are looking after the safety of land, fertilizers, farming, etc..

Now the department functions in its own building near panchayath office.
