|
The history
of vazhakkad is being related to the Chaliyar River. This
river is moulding the culture, custom and the living style
of people in vazhakkad.
Chaliyar River was early means of transportation for the people
here.
Though agriculture was their major source of income to live,
the river paved way for many other opening to live. Transportation
of woods from one place to other, fishing, boat services etc
were the other sources to live.
|
Now days these situations has
changed a lot. Even then the past living styles still exist
in the minds of the people here.
Vazhakkad panchayath constitutes of the old Vazhakkad, Ananthayur.
Cheruvayoor, Chaliyapuram and Mapram. This panchayath includes
people of both Hindu and Muslim religions. Major part of the
population is of Muslim religion. |
| |
It is a
place of unity in diversity. This place was under the governance
of Samoothirians before coming in the hands of the British.
As a result of this Nilambur Kovilakam, Kizhakke Kovilakam,
Padinjare Kovilakam etc became the landlords. |
| |
| In short, the history of Vazhakkad
is related to certain persons, families and their roles in various
activities. |
| |
The history
of Vazhakkad remains incomplete without telling about the
Koyppathodi family. This was one of the richest families with
all comforts and rights during that period. They owned 64
elephants and most of the lands in the Malabar regions. They
were the owners of various businesses, bungalows, and resorts
that was connected with private roads telephones etc. This
might be an unbelievable story for the new generations. But
this was a solid truth that still remains as such. |
| |
Mammad Kutty
Shirasthadar of koyppathodi family established the famous
Islamic study center Darul Ulum. Kanniyath Ahammad Musliyar,
E. Moidu Moulavi K.M. Moulavi Kuthubi Ahammad musliyar etc
and national leaders were those who studied and teached here
in this institution. In this new era this institution has
become an Arabic college under the affiliation of Calicut
University. |
| |
As a part
of the freedom fight many eminent leaders like K. Kelappan,
Muhammad Abdul Rahim, Moidu Moulavi, A.V. Kuttymalu Amma,
K.M. Seethi Sahib, and Pokar Sahib etc stepped in vazhakkad.
Later the district board member Azhakath Kodoli Kunjunni Nair
also came. He became the president for the construction of
roads, hospitals, wells, Harijan schools and other institutions. |
| |
During 1946
koyppathodi Ahammad Kutty hajji became the member in Madras
Assembly. Azhakath Kodoli Kunjunni Nair and Kolathikkal Mammad
Kutty hajji were elected as representatives of regions including
Vazhakkad in Malabar district board. This heritage was followed
by the former minister .E.T Muhammad Basheer and Elamaram
Kareem. |
| |
Vazhakkad
panchayath came into existence on January 1st 1962. For 2
years it was under the rule of special officer. In 1964 the
former ruling party and in 1975 the second ruling party came
into existence. This was till 1984 and after that again it
was under the rule of special officer. It was in October 2nd
1995 the present ruling party came into existence. |
| |
The office
of Vazhakkad panchayath was established in 1982 and started
its activities there after. The shopping complex and the stadium
constructed by the panchayath is one of their added remarks.
Another remarkable activity of panchayath was they made the
transportation much easier by constructing roads connecting
to all small regions with the co-operation of people in the
panchayath. |
| |
The factory
in Mavoor named Gwalior Rayon’s factory started in 1960s
has played a crucial role in changing the life style of the
people here. |
| |
Apart from
all these certain negative impacts took place due to the factory
outlets. The air and water pollution that happened during
that period is still a bad dream in minds of people here. |
| |
Past memories
on one side makes us proud about the positive things happened
and other side makes us aware about the evils happened due
to the unawareness of doing things without much thinking. |
| |
| The past
experience of our ancestors, the achievements etc are the
heritage that we gained in which we should add our role as
a social commitment, which in turn benefits the next generations. |
